November 29th, 2019 World Prestigious University Chess Invitational Tournament has come to an end at Nankai University. After 41 days of competition, 15 winners eventually got the medals of the competition. Benefiting from home advantage, Nankai University’s students won 5 medals.
The tournament was co-sponsored by the Chess and Card Sports Management Center of General Administration of Sport of the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese Chess Association, the Tianjin Sports Bureau, and Nankai University. The tournament attracted more than 50 elite players from 12 top universities all over the world, including the University of Toronto, Harvard University, University College London, University of Missouri, Moscow State University, Princeton University, Japan University team, St. Louis University, University of New South Wales, Oxford University and Nankai University.
The tournament was a round-robin lightning game with three rounds per day. In 11-rounds competitions, 12 teams showed their intelligence in playing chess. Nankai University, University of Missouri and University of St. Louis won the championship, second place and third place respectively, while Nankai University’s second team, Moscow State University and Harvard University respectively won the fourth, fifth and sixth place.
Jiangchuan Ye, Vice President of the International Chess Federation, Vice Director of Chess and Card Sports Management Center of General Administration of Sport of the People’s Republic of China, and President of the Chinese Chess Association, Luhua Wang, Deputy Director of Tianjin Sports Bureau, and Kexin Yang, Vice Chancellor of Nankai University attended the closing ceremony and delivered trophies, medals, certificates and mascots to the winners.
As a birthday gift for the 100-year-old Nankai University, 2019 World Prestigious University Chess Invitational Tournament aims at establishing friendly exchanges between world famous universities with chess as link. People in charge of Tianjin Chess and Card Sports Management Center, Tianjin Chess Association, Nankai University’s Department of Sports and Office of International Academic Exchanges participated at the activity.
